Deaths
Jerry Bornstein, deputy chief librarian at Baruch, died suddenly in February. Jerry was a senior researcher and reference librarian at NBC News for many years before joining Baruch in 1994. He performed numerous reference and instructional duties, including teaching an information and society course. Jerry’s journalism background came in handy where he served as editor of Urban Library Journal. He enthusiastically encouraged librarians to become active in LACUNY and helped many learn more about being academic librarians. Jerry’s friendly, witty personality can be seen in a video describing some of his library experiences.
Anna Brady, who retired from the Queens College Library in 2000 after more than twenty years of service to the college, died in May. As Coordinator of Instructional Services, she helped expand the library program of instruction to legions of students. Faculty will remember Anna for her strengthening of library resources in sociology, Irish studies, women’s studies, and media studies. Anna was also active in both the Academic Senate and University Faculty Senate. A native of Ireland, she was a quick wit, a gourmand, a theatergoer, and true Manhattanite. She was an inspiration to many and will be sorely missed. In Anna’s memory, the library will buy books to add to our collection.
Allan Mirwis, a reference librarian and archivist at Kingsborough since 1993, died in June. Allan wrote the two-volume Subject Encyclopedias: User Guide, Review Citations, and Keyword Index (Oryx Press, 1999). At the time of his death, he was working on the Virtual Holocaust Resource Center.
