The 2018 LACUNY Dialogues will focus on libraries, free speech, and civil discourse.

Please join us at the CUNY Graduate Center Room 9205 on Friday, February 23 from 2:00-4:00pm for a town-hall style, participatory discussion. Coffee and light refreshments will be available.

Given that “free expression and free access to ideas” are central values of librarianship, how do librarians--as scholars, educators, and social justice advocates--support free speech and academic freedom in polarized political, social, and institutional environments? What roles do institutional policies or codes of conduct play in ensuring a balance between free speech and civility? Do institutional cultures constrain free speech or limit academic freedom? Do academic publishers amplify certain voices at the expense of others? How should libraries and institutions respond when public scholars are attacked online? How should librarians respond to efforts by online platforms to restrict access to content, regulate speech, or vet information?
